Tomatoes
2008 season I tried something new. I took 1/2 gal. juice bottles, cut the bottom out and drilled holes in the cap, and several on one side of the bottle. I put them next to the tomato plant as I planted with the holes in side toward the plant. I did this on 1/2 of my garden so I could judge the success. It allowed me to really concentrate my watering to the roots and saved quite an amount on my water bill. It was successful enough that for the 2009 season, I used a bottle for each plant. I will report here my success or failure with the project.
My experiment proved that I could save consider amount of water for my garden. In 2009 I used the bottles on everything including cucumbers and peppers. I use a well known brand of garden fertilizer and fertilize though the bottles also.
In 2010 we have had a huge amount of moisture so I have not had to water like in the past, but still fertilize though the bottles. After 3 years experience I can sum it up as extremely successful and has cut expenses in both water and fertilizer.

These plants averaged 5 feet tall. You can see I used a wire frame supported by a 1in by 2in stake 48 inches long. As of Oct 12, in Missouri, the center of the United States we are still picking tomatoes. | ||
